Shane Clements: the UnHypnotist

No One Actually Cares, And That’s a Good Thing

In the digital age, with a never-ending stream of photos, videos, articles, and tweets available at our fingertips, there’s a cold, hard truth content creators might find difficult to swallow: Most people probably don’t give a damn about what you post. It’s a bitter pill, especially when we pour heart, soul, and sometimes significant financial resources into our online creations. But understanding this can be empowering, liberating, and could be the key to genuine success.

Overwhelmed and Overloaded

The modern digital consumer is in a state of perpetual content inundation. From influencers traveling to the most exotic corners of the globe, to scholars sharing revolutionary thoughts, to the barrage of daily updates from friends and family, our feeds are overflowing. Content fatigue is real. With such a vast universe of content to explore, it’s hard for anyone to genuinely care about one more post.
Transient Attention Spans

Recent studies suggest that our attention spans are now shorter than that of a goldfish. In such an environment, unless your content is groundbreaking, jaw-dropping, or incredibly valuable, it will likely be scrolled past, lost in the digital abyss.

The Silver Lining

It sounds disheartening, doesn’t it? But understanding this can be your most significant asset.

Freedom to Experiment: If people aren't invested in every piece of content you produce, then you have a blank slate every time you create. This freedom can lead to innovation. Test out different ideas, see what sticks, and most importantly, see what you genuinely enjoy producing.

Quality Over Quantity: Instead of churning out daily content for the sake of staying relevant, focus on creating less frequent but higher quality, valuable content. Make each post, video, or article so good that it breaks through the noise.

Genuine Connections: People might not care about every post, but they do care about genuine connections. Instead of broad, generic content, focus on niche topics that resonate deeply with a specific community. Build relationships, engage sincerely, and cultivate a tight-knit community.

The Real Question: Why Are You Creating?

To navigate this seemingly indifferent digital landscape, one must reflect: Why am I creating? If the aim is to seek validation or approval, the unpredictable nature of audience engagement can be deeply unsettling. But if it’s to express, share knowledge, or genuinely connect, then the number of likes, shares, or comments become secondary.
Strategies to Make Them Care

While it’s true many might scroll past without a second glance, here are some strategies to grab attention:

Storytelling: We're hardwired to love stories. Instead of just facts, weave narratives into your content.
Value Proposition: Before posting, ask, "What's in it for them?" Whether it's a unique insight, a solution to a common problem, or just a good laugh, ensure your content offers tangible value.
Engage Actively: Don't just post and ghost. Engage with comments, participate in discussions, and be present.
Consistency: While not every post will be a hit, regular posting can build familiarity and trust over time.

In the grand, expansive digital universe, it’s true that most content might seem like inconsequential specks. But with the right approach, even in this vastness, you can carve out a space that resonates, engages, and yes, makes people care.

Remember, in an age of abundance, scarcity is value. Be scarce in the content you create, but abundant in the value you provide. And most importantly, whether they care or not, never lose sight of why you started creating in the first place.
